The moment before starting

What the loop is running on

There's a concept in decision research called "choice overload" — the finding that more options don't reliably produce better decisions, and often produce decision paralysis instead. Barry Schwartz documented this extensively in work on consumer choice, but the same mechanism shows up at the level of task initiation. When a task has no clear entry point, the brain treats it as an open choice set. And open choice sets invite deliberation.

The deliberation isn't irrational. Given genuine ambiguity, it makes sense to think before acting. The problem is that "write the report" or "work on the project" or "deal with the finances" aren't tasks in any operational sense. They're categories. Categories don't have starting points. So the pre-task thinking loops because there's nothing to terminate it — no moment where the decision is actually made.

This is why someone can spend forty minutes thinking about a task that takes twenty minutes to do. The forty minutes isn't wasted in the way people assume. Something is happening — just not anything that closes the loop. The brain is trying to resolve an ambiguity that the task description never resolved.

Knowing this intellectually doesn't help at the moment it's happening. That's the part worth sitting with. It runs at the level of: what do I actually do first, right now, with my hands.

Where pre-task thinking gets stuck

The specific failure point is usually one of three things, and they're worth naming plainly because they respond to different fixes.

The first is an undefined entry point. The task exists but the first physical action doesn't. "Start working on the presentation" has no first action. "Open the slide file and write one sentence for the opener" does. The gap between those two descriptions is where most pre-task loops live.

The second is a scope problem. The task, as mentally represented, is too large. The brain knows it can't finish in one sitting and doesn't know what finishing one sitting even looks like. So it stalls. Not from fear, exactly — from genuine uncertainty about what would constitute progress. A task without a stopping condition has no natural resting point, which makes starting feel like committing to something with no exit.

The third is approach-avoidance conflict that attaches to the task for reasons that have nothing to do with the task itself. A difficult email feels harder to start if the last similar email produced conflict. A creative project feels bigger than it is if the previous one went badly. The task carries sediment. The sediment isn't visible, but it adds friction at the moment of initiation.

These three problems — no entry point, no scope, and accumulated sediment — each look like overthinking from the outside. They each require a slightly different intervention. But they all share a common fix: a pre-formed, specific decision made before the session starts, not during it.

The role of implementation intentions

The research on implementation intentions — developed primarily by Peter Gollwitzer in the 1990s and extensively replicated since — is specific about what changes behavior at the moment of initiation. It's not motivation. It's not understanding. It's a pre-committed if-then plan: if situation X occurs, then I will perform response Y.

The mechanism is that the if-then structure offloads the initiation decision to a pre-made instruction, which the brain can execute without re-entering deliberation. The decision is already made. What remains is just following it.

This doesn't eliminate overthinking completely. Nothing does, and promising otherwise would be misleading. What it eliminates is the specific variety of pre-task looping that runs on unresolved decisions — which is most of it. The sediment problem, the accumulated friction from previous failures or conflicts, requires something different: usually acknowledgment that the task is harder for reasons unrelated to the task, followed by a deliberately low-stakes entry point. The first action, in those cases, should be almost insultingly small. Not because small tasks are good, but because a tiny action breaks the loop by ending the deliberation phase, and once the loop is broken, momentum tends to carry forward.

"Open the file" counts. "Do the work" doesn't. Then notice what happens at the moment of initiation — whether the loop starts, or whether there's just the next thing to do.
