The answers are usually uncomfortable. Most people find that three or four sources are doing nearly all the work, and the rest are producing the sensation of learning without the substance of it.
What to do today
Pick one input stream to close, completely, for two weeks. Not pause. Not archive. Close. Unsubscribe from one newsletter. Remove one app from the phone. Put one unstarted book back on the shelf.
The goal isn't to stop learning. The goal is to run a controlled experiment on whether the removal produces a cognitive cost or a cognitive benefit. For most people who are already over their processing threshold, the honest answer is that it produces relief — a small, unmistakable opening in the attention that was quietly occupied by something that wasn't doing much.
